MACRO, the new museum in Rome, has already been written about as THE hub for contemporary art in Italy despite the opening of the new building by Odile Decq being long delayed. May 29-30 2010 there is a preview of the new space and a surprise exhibit of works from the permanent collection; this is open to the public but RSVP strictly is required (reserve online here). June 1 2010 there will be nine new exhibits, on until August 22, 2010 in the gallery’s old exhibition area.
From January through April the MACRO hosted Kabakov’s Blue Carpet, of which we can see a virtual tour online, and illywords contributor Marco Minuz went to see it. He reflects on the space and its layout:
Ilya and Emilia Kabakov’s Blue Carpet seems to me to represent the MACRO museum. A space in which one can metaphorically, in every room, walk barefoot because there is no risk of tripping or hurting one’s self. Barefoot, we amplify the superfice of our senses. It’s a domestic place, in which every room reveals a different atmosphere, each corner has a different story or even surprise. Rooms in which live intimate stories, not one big narrative but a plurality of narratives, less presumptuous, more uncertain. Like a big building lit up at night, with lights in each window that turn off and on, revealing and hiding various stories. Now this work (the Blue Carpet) is not there any more, but the multi-room layout of the museum remains. And I like this idea because it nicely renders our age, in which bright lights shine briefly, then turn off.
And so we are “Waiting for MACRO”, for the new exhibits that we hope are bright lights that will also be long-lasting (and energy-saving!). These include site-specific installations by: Gilberto Zorio, Luca Trevisani, Jacob Hashimoto, João Louro, Alfredo Pirri, Jorge Peris, Aaron Young, Oscar Savio and others.
