Italy’s museums and galleries are rolling out their Fall plans after the slow summer – here is a selection of exhibits that involve people who make up the “world of illywords”.

From August 28 to November 21 2010, Arti di Piranesi: Architetto, incisore, antiquario, vedutista, designer. At the Fondazione Cini in Venice, Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, an exhibit conceived by Michele de Lucchi makes the 18th-century worlf of Piranesi contemporary through the recreation, in solid materials, of some of the objects represented in Piranesi’s prints. Of particular note, a section of Piranesi prints hung with photographs taken by Gabriele Basilico from the same viewpoint in the 1970s which serves to remind us of how the city has changed yet remained, in some ways, similar.

Galleria Continua in San Gimignano solo exhibit of works by Michelangelo Pistoletto (September 25 2010 to January 22 2011).

In Venice, the Biennale is in full swing… If you’re in town don’t miss the photographs of Luca Campigotto at the Palazzo Fortuny (Sept. 4 2010 to Jan. 9, 2011); the 40 large-scale images in the exhibit My Wild Places take the viewer on a voyage through nature and photography.

Finally, if you feel the need to brush up on your knowledge of contemporary art, the MAXXI in Rome offers lessons in contemporary art history one saturday per month at 11:30am (in italian, entrance costs 4 euro).

And in the news…

We are always happy to hear about the successes of student contributors to illywords. Two Marina Girardi’s illustrations appeared in illywords #20 when she was a strip cartoon and illustration student in Bologna. Since 2007 she has been very busy: she has since published two illustrated books, Kurden People and Appenino (with comma 22 editore), and was recently featured in the newspaper l’Unità! Below is the video trailer for her latest book (in italian):

PS: It’s not in Italy, but if you happen to be in Berlin this month, stop by Galleria illy at KaDaWe and pick up a free copy of illywords, have a cup of coffee, and talk about art!
