Illywords received news of this call for submissions that will be of interest to young screenwriters worldwide. Tenders are called for the 2010/2011 Mattador Award for Italian and international young screenwriters. The award is in memory of Matteo Caenazzo, an eclectic and talented young man from Trieste who died at the age of 23 from leukemia last year.
The Competition includes two different sections: a story competition for young writers between 16 and 23 years of age and a screenplay competition for writers between 16 and 30 years of age. Awards include monetary prizes and an innovative education scholarship. A new section called CORTO86 and dedicated to short films was launched in this second edition: the winner will be rewarded with the production of a short film taken from his/her script.
No participation fee is required. Applications through the Mattodor website. Deadline April 15, 2011.
And the winner is: Melanie Gilligan. The Canadian artist represented by Galleria Soffiantino (Torino) is the winner of Present Future 2010 at Torino Artissima International Art Fair.
The atelier of Peter Lorenz has received the Premio Marcello D’Olivo 2010 for Sottolfaro, six “floating” houses on the gulf of Trieste, right under the city’s lighthouse. The glass box effect, oriented towards the sea, is influenced by Californian models and a first of its type of Trieste – and perhaps for Italy.
In his recent interview for illywords, Lorenz told us that he designed these houses without curtains. Inhabitants would wake up and be hit with the impact of the sea – blue, grey at times – and the sky; would go to bed with the rainbow of the sunset over the water. People feel vulnerable when confronted with the greatness of nature in this way.
I miei primi giorni di Scritture Giovani e illywords al festivaletteratura di Mantova – incontri con “vecchie conoscenze” di Scritture Giovani ed altri…
Experiencing Rehberger’s space in Berlin from set-up to opening night has been intense. I saw it take form, the acid green, orange, black and white reverberating inside me… As they took the protective plastic off the pavement, I breathed a sigh of relief: I finally understood the space in all its beauty and visual impact. At the press conference during which the plans for this space were presented, Tobias Rehberger had said “This work allows people to enter into my art, to immerge themselves in the colours.” And now it is true; it’s exactly as planned.
The Festivaletteratura di Mantova – Mantova’s big literature festival – is just two weeks away. Illywords will be available in select locations so you can pick up your free copy (the list is below). We’re excited about the events featuring young authors from the Scritture Giovani program; this moment in Mantua will always be the best incubator that helps generate relations between editors and aspiring authors.
illywords #29 on the theme of colour will be presented at Galleria illy in Berlin, which runs from September 2 to 25, 2010. Here are some photos of and details about the Galleria and what you can expect from illywords during the event.
Want to know what the theme is for issue #29 of illywords? Which school participated this time, and where to get your free copy? Illywords will be available at three major arts and cultural events this Fall…
We received this news that we’re happy to publish from Dobrila Denegri, artistic director of nKa-Ica in Belgrade. Along with her students in 2005 she participated in illywords #13.
Real Presence is the biggest international workshop for emerging generation of artists in the Balkan region. Since 2001, the “Real Presence” workshop has been held as annual event in Belgrade and occasionaly in other cities such as Venice, Istanbul, and Turin. Editions saw from 100 to 300 participants. The workshop is a combination of educational and practical activities: daily scheduled lectures and panels, performances, multimedia presentations and finally, the creation of a dynamic exhibition that lasts one day and takes place in various public spaces and museums.
Currently, registration for the 2010 edition is open to artists under the age of 32 and registered in an arts academy. For information see: www.real-presence.org.
Call for applications for the Renaissance Arts Prize 2010 (open to UK and Italy resident artists under 35); this year’s theme draws inspiration from a chapter of Susan Sontag’s famous essay On Photography and from the life of Italian artist Mario Giacomelli.
These days, we are taking our contacts with the schools involved in the illywords project. On February 2nd we will have a first meeting in Milan to define the first issue of 2010.I remember my first experience…..
The beginning of the year is an open book upon which we know that we can write any good resolves without really having to follow through. The change affects all areas: partner, home, work, attitude, diet.
And this is what I feel when I look at coming year, and I think about next issues of illywords, the connected contents or the schools that will soon be contacted to collaborate on graphics and images.
Many starting points and many ideas. Especially if we consider how many people speculate about the end of the world in 2012. There is too little time.
So must we hurry to change?
I think though not as imminent as they call prophecies, we need to change and look more to the values . From small, within our province, to large ones which involve greater communities.
I’m browsing through the trends for 2010 and I’d like to raise this thought. Companies be careful!*
In mature consumer societies, companies will have to do more than just embrace the notion of being a good corporate citizen. To truly prosper, they will have to ‘move with the culture’. This may mean displaying greater transparency and honesty, or having conversations as opposed to one-way advertising, or championing collaboration instead of an us-them mentality. Or, it could be intrinsically about generosity versus greed, or being a bit edgy and daring as opposed to safe and bland.
So, illywords starts the year over with this point in mind.

2009 end of the year.
We are striking the balance.
Many hopes.
Hope that 2010 be a year of culture.
Hope that there are resources to support it, hope that ourselves are talking more with others and, above all, listen more to others.
Best wishes
These aren’t random numbers, but rather the fruit of 8 years of work between illywords and 27 international graphic design schools, and over 120 meetings and interviews with artists, curators, scientists, and designers.
A global world of creativity representing all professions and arts, blended with the images created by hundreds of students from throughout the world, who have now gone on to become their own persons, big or small, after starting their careers in the best schools in the world, at all latitudes.
This is illywords’ current reality. A courageous act from a company like illycaffè, which for many years has put its thoughts to paper in a magazine that provides a cultural break for thousands of readers. At its own expense, with no profits whatsoever, without mentioning the coffee it produces, secure in the awareness that culture and thoughts are not exclusive to one brand or the other.
I have been editing the magazine since early 2002, and I know that over all these years there have been many schools of thought – even within the company – regarding illywords. The decision of maintaining open dialogues and refusing to advertise our products was not shared by everyone, particularly those who are responsible for turning a profit. This is a new path for today’s firms.
They are no longer a mere tool for making a profit, but collective groups of individuals with thoughts and impulses, who can be more or less competitive, and forge ahead with courageous initiatives, or not-so-courageous ones. Each firm and brand must be responsible for what it says, but even more for what it thinks and how it implements it.
It can do so with its products, but also with a magazine that does not turn a profit, but reaches thousands of people throughout the world. Now available through dialogues online.
Ernesto Illy, a great thinker, used to tell me:
“Defend this project, because if we don’t do it, who else will?”
What born first: the chicken or the egg?
Well, it doesn’t matter, really: the important thing is to be born!
Today illywords blog is born with its thoughts, its doubts, and really want to “make words”.
You can attend this departure and have your say.
Also on facebook.
(I feel so much chicken though).

There are several ways to activate a blog.
Some are lucky or not.
I invite you to “make words” joining us on illywords. Do not just open a dialogue, not only exchange of ideas. The words do it all. Here are some points:
.. have a head and use it
.. have the will to express ideas and thoughts
.. use ideas and thoughts to make graphics, art, design,
.. find graphic art and design in a physics magazine
.. find the magazine in the world.
This is the “making words” of illywords.
Let’s do it!
