The RE+ light fixture is a project winner of La Casa del Terzo Millennio (2009); designed by Stefano Giovacchini (who told us recently about his profession of colour design, remember?) it’s a flexible light fixture made from a plastic core that is re-used from the textile yarn dyeing process.
I’ve reached the end of my Turkish adventure, and after eight trips to Istanbul I’ll always have my colourful memories of the place…
Sunsets over the Bosphorus (best experienced when in good company); the pita and delicious Kebabs; the barbequed eggplant… I already miss my favourite restaurant, “Doğa Balik”, which is accessed via a very narrow elevator that takes you to the seventh floor from which you are treated to an incredible view… And then there’s Taksim, the area of Istanbul to which I have realized all roads lead.
After two months of discussing colour on the blog and facebook, I continue to think this is a rich topic – which is why I was happy to find a website that not only provides articles about colour in a wide range of circumstances but also has tools for “colour lovers”. COLOURlovers is a community of almost half a million people who use the site’s online palette-creation tools to do anything from designing websites to deciding the right theme for a wedding; they also discuss hues on the forum and contribute luscious blog posts. I contacted Darius A Monsef IV, the founder of COLOURlovers, to try to get to the bottom of our obsession with colour.
For illywords #29, Marco Minuz interviewed curator Luca Massimo Barbero about colour. The video below is in Italian.
Colour and attraction, Colour and seduction. They seem to go hand in hand. What role does colour play in the process of seduction by things or people? To verify my theory I consulted artist and seduction expert Laura González. Here is our conversation.
For more than thirty years, from Belgium to Morocco, and from India to Egypt, Harry Gruyaert has been recording the subtle chromatic vibrations of Eastern and Western light. While at Galleria illy in Istanbul, we asked him what role colour plays in his photography – knowing full well that the answer could only be in favour of the importance of colour. Here is his answer on video.
What’s more important, colour or light? Peter Lorenz contributed to the current issue on colour with an interview in which he talked about, amongst other things, colour in architecture. This video is from that conversation with Marco Minuz.
I’m not the first to notice that in Ireland, Nature wants to be more important; she’s in control and you have to get used to her. The sky above you follows you, makes fun of you – and you’re never dressed appropriately. Ireland is blanketed by a color that it would be disrepectful to call ‘green’: it’s “green plus”.
Stefano Giovacchini, a colour designer in Lucca, talks about how you become a “colour designer” and what that means. In his line of work, he has to communicate colour to clients, about which he says: “Colour is an alphabet. It’s its own order or language. If I create contrast between red and green, that’s not a story I tell with words; I’ll communicate it much better with two paint samples.”
News of a new fountain design by Daniel Buren, to be installed at Villa La Magia in Quarrata.
Struck by the strong design and colours of the garden designed by Stefano Marinaz and his team at the Domaine de Chaumont sur Loire international garden festival, our reporter Marco Minuz interviewed him about garden design, the Festival, and the role of colour in this space.
As a child, I loved flipping through the family photo albums and looking at the old photos, first black and white, then in colour, of my grandparents, distant ancestors, cousins I never met, family friends, my parents’ younger selves. Although great-grandpa’s handlebar moustache was a lot of fun, I always lingered longer on a series of photos of my mother in her late teens, dressed in what seemed to be an endless series of yellow, and often polka-dotted, outfits. In recent years, it seems to me that we’ve developed an association between yellow and the 1960s and 70s, thanks to the natural ageing of the kodak paper and polaroid photos …
The pop cover of illywords #29 contains holes through which we can try to see the world as we once did when we were little, looking through a kalaidoscope that filtered reality and brought on marvellous emotions. Mix the shades of your emotions as you please, adjust the quantities and alter the tones. Decide what colour you are today!
A print magazine has limited space; a theme like colour has unlimited possibilities. So, for the next two months, illywords blog will talk about COLOUR!
Odile Decq has a unique take on the colour black. She explains in this video what it means to her, and explores what it means for others…
illywords #29 on the theme of colour will be presented at Galleria illy in Berlin, which runs from September 2 to 25, 2010. Here are some photos of and details about the Galleria and what you can expect from illywords during the event.
Want to know what the theme is for issue #29 of illywords? Which school participated this time, and where to get your free copy? Illywords will be available at three major arts and cultural events this Fall…
