Winter brings out the creative side in all of us! What better time than the holidays to make some crafts in some of these great workshops, or to get involved in something new with a lecture or special visit. A list of options that I could dig up in Italian or English in Italy… let us know if you’ve seen anything else similar, here or abroad!
A month of art throughout the Italian peninsula from the world of illywords… Events in Rimini, Milan, Florence and Rome.
Here’s what’s on in the world of illywords for this October in Milan, Istanbul, and Spain. First off, it’s the 6th annual Contemporary Art Day (Giornata del Contemporaneo) in Italy on Saturday October 9th, 2010. Participating museums and institutions are opening their doors for free. This initiative is run by AMACI (the association of contemporary museums in Italy) and you can find a list of events on their website (amaci.org).
While September was still a little slow, the past few weeks have been characterized by one opening after the next. We’ve noticed a flurry of activity by past illywords participants in Milan, for example:
Triennale di Milano: the exhibit “Antibodies: The works of Fernando and Humberto Campana” opens soon (October 15 2010 to January 15 2011). Select works by the Brasilian brothers are used to explore the theme of eco-sustainability (always one of our interests), reconsidering the precious (or not) nature of materials in their re-use in new ways.
At the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea (Cinisello Balsamo – Milano) the show “Grandi e Piccoli” (big and small) presents photography in both large and small format by a selection of important Italian and international artists from the 1960s to the present day. Amongst the names of participants, the ubiquitous Gabriele Basilico, the fascinating Mimmo Jodice, and Cristina Nuñez. Until March 20 2011.
Feeling the need to “go East”? Photos that Gabriele Basilico has taken in Istanbul are up at Milano’s Fondazione Stelline, Gallery II until December 12 [see photo]. The 30 photos in Istanbul 05.010 – on display for the first time here – document the transformation of Istanbul’s urban landscape over the past 5 years, a meeting of past and present that has fascinated our own Ariella Risch as she is in Istanbul right now with Galleria Illy.
Which, in fact, is the next event we want to mention: Galleria Illy has moved from Berlin to Istanbul where you can visit it (at Galeri Işık Teşvikiye) until October 23d. If you’re in town, consult the full schedule of events at galleria illy istanbul and stop by for an expresso and a chat.
For the latest issue of illywords (#29 on colour) we collaborated with Istanbul Bilgi University and we’re always interested in what students are up to, which is why we’re happy to publish the news of the latest installment of Feldstärke International 2010, a year-long international exchange and production program that unites students from leading art academies and conservatories in Germany, France, USA and Turkey. After a week in Istanbul, students will be performing and exhibiting the results of this inspiring stay at Kadırga Arts Production Center on Saturday October 9th at 17:30 (Kadırga Limanı Cad. No: 82 Kadırga, Istanbul).
From Istanbul we turn our sights to the other side of the Mediterranean Basin… This weekend (October 8-10 2010) illy is present at MEDIMED – The Euro-Mediterranean Documentary film market networking event – in Sitges, not far from Barcelona. And speaking of the Catalan capital, ULLS Festival opens there on October 14 at various locations. The festival’s goal is to promote dialogue between Europe and Latin American cultures. Stop by the ULLS COFFEE ART space inside the Mercat de les Flors for a cuppa illy and a free copy of illywords!
Finally, from October 21 to November 14 there’s EUROPES Contemporary Culture Festival that has the aim of bringing contemporary culture closer to students, help set up networks between young people from different European countries, and create a space for learning and intercultural dialogue. In 200 locations around the city it’s a showcase for the latest European trends in the world of visual arts, music, film, literature, architecture, gastronomy, design and cultural and political thoughts. Illy supports all the literary actions by offering places to relax, reflect, and of course… to read illywords!
